Breaking News Online Pulls The Plug On iPhone App

BreakingNewsOnline is discontinuing its iPhone app as it looks to concentrate more on B2B services, the company announced. The iPhone app was launched over a year ago as an adjunct to its “@BreakingNews” Twitter account that BNO News managed until December 2009, when it handed over management to MSNBC.

The reasoning behind the transfer of its Twitter feed to MSNBC is similar to what drove BNO News’ decision to abandon its iPhone app now. Last year, BNO News created an international news wire service for businesses and it made the MSNBC deal to concentrate its resources there.

“In 2009 we decided to shift our focus and eventually offer our services solely to media organizations and other companies that want to make use of a news service,” said Michael van Poppel, president and founder of BNO News in a statement. “As our wire services are growing, our content is expanding, and our company is quickly expanding, we want to give our clients the full advantage by only offering services directly to them.”

In the same vein, offering services exclusively to its clients also means it couldn’t split off a free wire service to iPhone users. Release
